New book by Prof. Andrea Hofmann
The Origins of the Protestant Hymnal and its 500th Anniversary
Specialists shed light on the multifaceted history and design of the hymnal from historical, theological, musicological and cultural-historical perspectives. The volume offers a multi-layered panorama of the origins, development, and use of Lutheran, Reformed and Catholic hymnals. Their role in the liturgy is addressed as well as their function in military chaplaincy and in the penal system. In addition, the specific examples discussed illustrate their significance as an expression of female theology and piety. The richly illustrated Nuremberg editions show that the hymnal is an underestimated pictorial medium. Johann Andreas Cramer, a key figure in hymnbook culture during the Enlightenment, is discussed in detail. The complexity of reformed hymnal traditions is illustrated on the one hand by analyzing its use in a particular geographical area and on the other by examining its international impact. The history of the so-called Porstsche Gesangbuch shows how a hymnbook can become a cult object.
- A differentiated and varied look at the creation, use, and change of the Protestant hymnal.
- Contributions from a conference on the history and significance of the first Protestant hymnal and on its development over the centuries.
