Karl Barth Lectures 2024

Topic: Karl Barth's engagement with Friedrich Schleiermacher

You are warmly invited to this year's Karl Barth lectures!

From his early years as a young liberal theologian and almost until the end of his life, Karl Barth repeatedly engaged with Friedrich Schleiermacher. This was particularly intense in the academic year 1923/24, in which Barth gave a lecture on Schleiermacher in Göttingen during the phase of establishing his own approach to Systematic Theology and in which he published further works on the 'church father of the 19th century'. To mark the centenary of this intellectual encounter, this year's Karl Barth Lectures are dedicated to this topic. Two experts in this area, Prof. Christine Axt-Piscalar (Göttingen) and Prof. Folkart Wittekind (Bonn), will give lectures from the perspective of the history of theology. In addition, Dr. Anne Louise Nielsen (Basel) will speak on the eschatologies of Barth and Schleiermacher.
