Klopfenstein); 1983 doctorate in theology with a thesis on the commandment to love one's neighbour in the Hebrew Bible; 1983–1985 pastor in the ‘Paroisse réformée de l'Église évangélique-réformée de la République et Canton du Jura’; 1985–1987 scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation for the funding of research at the Theological Faculty of the Georg-August-University Göttingen; 1987–1988 scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation for the funding of research at the ‘École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem’; 1988–1991: Pasteur bilingue in the ‘Paroisse de l'Ajoie et du Clos du Doubs de l'Église évangélique- réformée de la République et Canton du Jura’; 1990 Habilitation in Hebrew Bible at the Protestant Theological Faculty of the University of Bern; 1991–1997 Extraordinarius for Hebrew Bible at the Theological Faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg; 1997–2017 Professor of Hebrew Bible and Semitic Philology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel.
